Coastal Sections for Sale

Palliser Bay Station is situated 50 kms south of Martinborough or less than two hours drive from Wellington on sealed roads.  The station which covers 3700 ha (9200 acres) farms sheep and cattle.

Sections range in size from 1100m2 to 2400m2. Electricity and telephone connections to each section lie underground. All wastewater from septic tanks (to be installed by section owners) will flow to a “state of the art” treatment plant. As part of the approval of the subdivision by the South Wairarapa District Council several conditions have been made which will form part of a schedule of covenants to protect purchasers. (see over).

Major consultation was held with local iwi, the Greater Wellington Regional Council, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and the Dept. of Conservation to ensure the environment was fully protected. The area has major significance for Maori as it is estimated it was first settled by them in the twelfth century. Stone walls which were built by them can be seen at the site.

In addition there are important flora and fauna nearby at Te Humenga point. As a result of which a large area has been covenanted to the Department of Conservation. Adjoining the development is an area that has been covenanted to the South Wairarapa District Council to allow native vegetation to regenerate.

The sections offer wonderful views across Palliser Bay to the Kaikoura mountains in the South Island. On clear days and for much of the year the snow capped mountains can be seen. In the evenings one can admire spectacular sunsets. To the right across the bay can be seen Wharekauhau, one of New Zealand’s foremost lodges.

The local area of the coast is renowned for its fishing and apart from cod, terakihi etc. paua and crayfish are plentiful.

The development lies just north of the fishing village, Ngawhi, where commercial fishermen’s boats line the waterfront, each with its own bulldozer.  The local fire station Ngawhi serves as a meeting point and in the weekends a very pleasant bar there is run by the locals.  Further on past Ngawhi is Cape Palliser lighthouse. Climbing the 250 steps to reach it, provides wonderful views.  On the way you pass the largest colony of seals in the North Island, some sleeping by the side of the road.

Next to Ngawhi is a challenging nine hole golf course and nearby is a great spot for surfing. Further north are The Putangirua Pinnacles used in “The Lord of the Rings”
